Box Score 2 FLORENCE, S.C. - The Newberry College softball team split its two games in the final day of the Patriot Invitational Softball Tournament at the Freedom Florence complex on Sunday.
The Lady Indians are now 16-13-1 on the season. Newberry returns to action Friday at the South Carolina Fastpitch Classic hosted by USC Upstate. The Lady Indians play Bluefield State at 1 p.m. followed by a 5 p.m. matchup against West Virginia Wesleyan.
Newberry 3, Fairmont State 0
The Lady Indians started the scoring in the second inning when Sara Powell (Ocean View, Del.) led off with double. She scored two batters later on an throwing error on a bunt by Tiffany Pigage (Lexington, S.C.).
Newberry scored two in the fourth inning on back-to-back singles by Kat Hammond (Irmo, S.C.) and Christina Kirby (Delmar, Del.). Senior Jenny Raines (Blythewood, S.C.) doubled to score both runners and provide the final score.
Powell was 1-for-3 with two runs and an RBI. Amy Jarrell (Dover, Del.) was 2-for-2 with a double.
Kristen Hicks (Bamberg, S.C.) started and pitched three innings, combining with Stephanie Monette (Conway, S.C.) and Kirby for a five-hit shutout. Monette picked up the win

Newberry struck first, scoring all three of its runs in the top of the first inning.
Courtney Lindler (Irmo, S.C) got on base with a single, but was later put out on a fielders' choice by Hammond. The Lady Indians strung together three singles in a row by Kirby, Powell and Raines. Powell's hit scored Hammond, while Raines drove home Kirby and Powell.
Powell was 2-for-3 in the game with an RBI and a run scored, while Raines was 1-for-3 with two RBIs.
All three Lady Indian pitchers once again saw action, with Monette (7-7) picking up the loss in 2-1/3 innings of work. The pitching staff gave up four earned runs on six hits.
