Lady Indians win two of three games in Patriot Invitational action Saturday

FLORENCE, S.C. - The Newberry College softball team went 2-1 on the day at the Patriot Invitational Softball Tournament at the Freedom Florence complex Saturday.

The Lady Indians are now 15-12-1 on the season, and close out the Invitational with two games Sunday. Newberry plays Fairmont State at 9 a.m., followed by a matchup with hosts Francis Marion at 1 p.m.

Freshman Jessica Reid (2, Walhalla, S.C.) was 2-for-2 with a three-run homerun in the bottom of the second to score Newberry's only runs.

Christina Kirby (Delmar, Del.) picked up the loss for Newberry.

Newberry 8, USC Aiken 0
Kirby went 2-for-4 from the plate and hit a two-run homer in the top of the first to start the Lady Indian scoring.

Courtney Lindler (Irmo, S.C.) drove in three runs in the second with a bases-loaded single combined with a two-base Pacer error. Kat Hammond (5, Irmo, S.C.) was 1-for-3 with a two-run homerun in the top of the second inning.

The Lady Indians were held scoreless from there until the seventh, when Sara Powell (Ocean View, Del.) drove home Hammond with a sacrifice fly.

Stephanie Monette (6-6, Conway, S.C.) went the distance for the Lady Indians, giving up seven hits and striking out six to earn her second shutout of the year.

Newberry 8, Lander 4
Lander capitalized on two Newberry errors in the first inning to take an early 2-0 lead.

Newberry answered with five runs in the bottom of the second. Reid drove home the first run with a bases-loaded sacrifice fly to right field. Lindler's bases-loaded 2-RBI single to right boosted the Newberry cause.

Lindler finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs, while Hammond was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Jenny Raines (Blythewood, S.C.) was 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Kirby (8-5) went seven innings to pick up the win, giving up two earned runs on six hits.
