Box Score 2 NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry College softball team started off Sunday's doubleheader with Pfeiffer University with a comeback 5-2 victory in Game One, but Pfeiffer earned the split with a 6-3 Game Two win.
Newberry's record goes to 6-7-1, while Pfeiffer is 3-5.
Game One: Newberry 5, Pfeiffer 2
After two early Pfeiffer runs, the Lady Indians blasted three homeruns to pick up the win in the first game of the twinbill.
The Lady Falcons' Stephanie Bethea led off the game by reaching on an error, and Sarah Moore reached base on a walk. Jaimee Cassidy drove Bethea and Moore in with a triple down the left field line to give Pfeiffer a 2-0 lead after the first half inning.
Newberry's Sara Powell (Ocean View, Del.) started to chip away at the Pfeiffer lead, as she led off the second inning with a homerun (3) to centerfield.
The Lady Indians grabbed the lead for good on a two-run homerun to left by senior shortstop Courtney Lindler (4, Irmo, S.C.) to give Newberry a 3-2 advantage. After Ginna Dean (Willow Springs, N.C.) reached base on a walk and stole second, Kat Hammond (Irmo, S.C.) blasted a deep sacrifice fly to center, allowing the speedy Dean to round third and beat the throw to the plate and make it 4-2 after five.
Powell added an insurance run with a solo homerun (4) to left-centerfield in the bottom of the sixth.
Stephanie Monette (3-3, Conway, S.C.) went the distance to pick up the win for Newberry, allowing two runs - one earned - on five hits, walking one and striking out three. Monette only allowed four baserunners after the first inning.
Dean stole three bases for Newberry.
Game Two: Pfeiffer 6, Newberry 3
The Lady Falcons answered Newberry's come-from-behind win with a comeback of their own, taking advantage of Newberry mistakes to win Game Two.
The Lady Indians opened the scoring in the bottom of the first, as a sacrifice hit from Christina Kirby (Delmar, Del.) plated Dean to give Newberry the early 1-0 lead.
Pfeiffer took the lead in the fourth inning after Cassidy got a one out single, and was plated when Sarah Moore smacked a double to deep left-center. Moore advanced to third on the throw home, and scored when Jessica Culler's bunt stayed in fair territory, allowing Moore to score on the sacrifice.
The Lady Falcons extended their lead to three runs in the top of the fifth. A Bethea fly ball to center turned into a three-base error, plating Tiffany Allen, and allowing Bethea to score when Powell was unable to control the throw from the outfield, giving Pfeiffer the 4-1 lead.
Newberry started the bottom of the sixth on a tear, with Powell reaching on a single and scoring on a double by Kirby to narrow the deficit to 4-2. However, the rally was cut short, when Hammond grounded into a double play.
Pfeiffer took the lead to 6-2 in the top of the seventh, thanks to a two-out, two-run double by starting pitcher Dacia Ijames.
The Lady Indians' Jessica Reid (Walhalla, S.C.) earned a double in the bottom of the seventh, and was plated by a Lindler single down the leftfield line, but Newberry was unable to manufacture the runs needed to earn the win.
Kirby (3-3) picked up the loss for the Lady Indians, giving up six runs - four earned - on eight hits, striking out two and walking two over her seven innings.
After three straight days of doubleheaders, the Lady Indians will take a day off before hosting the Lady Pacers of USC Aiken. First pitch of Tuesday's twinbill is scheduled for 2 p.m.
