Newberry Tops Benedict 68-50

NEWBERRY - Tonique Frasier (Walterboro, S.C.) broke the all-time career points record while leading Newberry College over Benedict College 68-50.  Frasier broke Virgina Carroll's record that has stood for 24 years.  The senior came into the season ranked sixth all time in points.  Less than half way through the season, Frasier has claimed the top spot for herself.  She currently has 1,445 career points.

With the win, the Lady Indians improve to 7-2 on the season.  The Benedict Tigers are seeking their fist win as they sit at 0-7.

The Lady Indians actually gained a two point advantage before tip-off.  Tacarra Harris (Tupelo, Miss.) converted two technical fouls to give the home team a 2-0 lead.

The Newberry defense led the way in the opening half of play.  The Lady Indians allowed only one field goal in the first 10 minutes of play helping them jump out to a 12-2 lead.  The Tigers did begin to have offensive success but the deficit was too much to overcome.  The visitors managed to get within seven points on a few occasions, but Newberry ultimately stretched the lead to 16 points.  A three pointer by Benedict's Nakeechia Davis from nearly half court as the buzzer sounded cut the Lady Indians' lead to 13 points heading into halftime making the score 36-23.

Newberry got great offensive production from its bench in the first half.  The Lady Indians substitutes combined for 22 of the team's 36 points.  Janine Ward (Tallevast, Fla.) and Hanna Porter (Brandon, Miss.) each had eight first half points from the bench.

The Lady Indians began the second half much like the first half.  Newberry's defense held the Tigers to only one field goal for over six minutes to begin the period.  The home team was able to widen its lead to 20 points at 45-25.

However, Benedict was not going down without a fight.  The Tigers went on an 11-1 run over the next four minutes to get back within 10 points at 46-36.  That would be as close as the Tigers would get in the game.  The Lady Indians quickly expanded the lead back to 17 points.  Newberry's lead grew to 21 points as the game was coming to close.  Showing their resiliency, the Tigers again hit a three-pointer as the clock expired to cut the lead to 18 points.  Newberry took the win by a score of 68-50.

Frasier led the team in scoring for the seventh time this season.  She recorded her second double-double of the season with 21 points and 12 rebounds.  Sade Coates (Meridian, Miss.) had 12 points and seven rebounds.  Porter ended the game with nine points.  Harris and Ward each finished with eight points.  Harris also brought down eight rebounds.

Benedict's Nakeechia Davis finished with a game-high 27 points.  Davis accounted for over half of the Tiger's offense.  Diundra Doughty had 11 points while Charvez Holmes pulled in seven boards.

Newberry returns to action next Monday in their last game before Christmas.  The Lady Indians will travel to Gaffney, S.C. to take on Limestone College.  Tip-off is at 5:30 p.m.
