AUGUSTA, Ga. - The Augusta State Lady Jaguars held Newberry scoreless for the first five minutes of their non-conference matchup Saturday afternoon and never trailed, claiming a 75-59 victory over the 24th-ranked Lady Indians at Christenberry Fieldhouse.
The contest marked the home opener for ASU, which evened its record at 1-1. The loss dropped Newberry, ranked No. 24 in the latest WBCA poll, to 2-1 on the young season.
Senior point guard Deo Ngulela notched her first double-double of the season with 15 points and 10 assists and was the only Lady Jaguar in double figures in scoring. Nicole Mealing, Sherika Parker and Jasmine Godwin had nine points each for ASU.
Leanne Watson paced Newberry with 10 points, while Tonique Frasier and Ashley Marine each chipped in nine points.
The Lady Jags owned the rebounding edge 50-43 and connected on 19-of-27 free throws (70.4 percent), compared to just 8-of-24 (33.3 percent) at the charity stripe for the visitors. ASU also outscored Newberry 34-14 in the paint.
The Lady Jags jumped out to an 8-0 lead and led by as much as 11 on four occasions, the last on a Godwin 3-pointer with 13 seconds left in the half to put ASU ahead 37-26 at the half.
Newberry scored the first two buckets of the second half to pull within seven of the lead before ASU responded with an 11-0 run. The Lady Jags took their biggest lead of the contest on back-to-back baskets by Ngulela, the last with 7:55 remaining.
