NEWBERRY - Wingate University defeated Newberry College, 3-2, in South Atlantic Conference men's soccer action Wednesday afternoon. The Indians fell to 1-3 in the SAC with the defeat.

It was a very physical game between Newberry and Wingate as both teams continued to try and climb the SAC ladder. The game featured 50 fouls, seven cards and three penalty kicks. 

After a scoreless first half, it was the Bulldogs who got on the board first when Luke Mulholland took a pass from Kerrin Sheldon on a free kick and fired it past Newberry goalie Will Dieterich (Tampa, Fla.) from 25 yards away. 

The score remained 1-0 in the 72nd minute, when Wingate's Kirby Burkholder received a red card after an altercation with Dieterich in front of the Newberry goal. The Indians used the one man advantage to their advantage, moving the ball around in the offensive zone. 

In the 77th minute Debola Ogunseye (Lagos, Nigeria) drew a foul in the box and the opportunity for a penalty kick. Ogunseye beat the goalie to the right to tie the game at 1-all.

Wingate reclaimed the lead in the 86th minute when Ben Clark headed in a free kick from Adam Cunningham, giving the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead.

Newberry would tie it up again one minute later when Kwame Gyamfi (Accra, Ghana) received the ball on a breakaway and was taken down in the penalty area. Gyamfi converted on the penalty kick, beating the goalie to the left and tying the game at 2-all.

The game would not remain tied long though as Wingate drew a foul in the penalty area less then a minute later. Kerrin Sheldon took the penalty kick and just got it in as the ball bounced off both the keeper's hand and the post before falling in for a goal. The goal gave Wingate a 3-2 lead with just over two minutes remaining.

Newberry tried to create one last opportunity but the Indians were unable to tie the game.

The loss was the first of the year for the Indians in the Newberry Soccer Complex. The team is now 5-1 at home this year.

Newberry now finds in self in an uphill battle to try and gain a top four seed in the conference and a home game in the first round of the SAC tournament. The Indians have just three points in conference play after compiling a record 1-3, including two straight losses to conference opponents.

Newberry will try to right the ship this weekend as they depart on a two game road trip through West Virginia. The Indians will face off against Alderson-Broaddus on Saturday, October 6, at 1 p.m.
