MARS HILL, N.C. - Three Mars Hill players scored double-digit points while the Lady Lions shot 58 percent from the field to get the 74-62 victory over Newberry on Monday evening at the Stanford Arena.
Mars Hill moves to 8-4 overall and a 2-0 mark in the South Atlantic Conference. Newberry's overall record now stands at 12-2 with a 1-2 record in league play. The Lady Indians will hit the road once again on Wednesday evening as they face Lenoir-Rhyne for a 6:00 pm tip-off.
The Lady Lions jumped out to a 16-7 lead at the 13:13 mark of the first half when Lindsay Roberts converted on a layup. The Lady Indians would cut the Mars Hill lead to five points at 24-19 when Ashley Marine drained a three-point basket with 6:58 remaining in the first half. From there, however, Mars Hill would go on a 17-9 run over the final 6 minutes played to take a 41-28 lead into the locker room at halftime.
In the second half, Mars Hill continued their hot shooting from the field and moved out to a 17-point lead when Alison Schafer's layup with 6:39 to play gave the Lions a 62-45 lead.
Tonique Frasier registered her fifth double-double of the season with 16 points and 11 rebounds while also recording four steals. Monica Alexander had her third-straight double-figure scoring game with 12 points. Marine came off the bench and scored 14 points, including four-of-eight from beyond the arc.
Roberts led Mars Hill in scoring with 20 points on nine-of-11 shooting from the field. Abby Debusk finished with 19 points while Schafer contributed 15 points on the evening.
