Lady Indians outlast Pioneers 61-48 for fourth SAC win

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. - For the second straight game, Newberry held an opponent to under 50 total points as the Lady Indians improved to 4-2 in the South Atlantic Conference and 15-2 overall with a 61-48 triumph over Tusculum College (11-6, 3-3 SAC) on Saturday afternoon at Pioneer Arena.

The Pioneers fell down eight points at the 12:54 mark in the second half after junior forward Tonique Frasier converted from short range on a Monica Alexander drive and dish. Behind 38-30, Tusculum scored five unanswered capped by senior Chassity Martin's lay-up with 10:43 left to pull within three.

Twenty-nine seconds later the Lady Indians countered with the junior tandem of Frasier and Alexander. It was Monica Alexander once again finding a cutting Frasier for a right-handed finger roll to give Newberry a 40-35 lead.

Over the next 7:13, the scarlet and gray hit just one field goal but protected the lead at the free throw line. Drawing six fouls, the Lady Indians went 5-for-8 at the charity stripe and still held a four-point lead with 3:50 remaining.

After pioneer freshman Lindsay Barta failed to capitalize on two free throw attempts, Alexander converted her first field goal of the game to start a 13-4 until time expired. Alexander finished the game with eight points, all in the second half, and seven assists.

Tonique Frasier registered her seventh double-double of the season with 13 points and 16 rebounds.

However it was Ashlee Wright that provided consistent offense. The junior from Myrtle Beach notched a game and season-high 16 points on 4-of-11 shooting from the field and 8-of-10 shooting from the free throw line. Wright also finished with two assists and three steals in 32 minutes of play.

As a team, Newberry held a very dangerous outside shooting team to less than 19 percent from behind the three-point line and 36.4 percent overall.

The Lady Indians also dominated the battle on the glass. Newberry grabbed 17 offensive rebounds and 49 total, besting Tusculum's 32.

Despite tying the game five times, the Pioneers only held one lead in the game and that was 2-0.

For the Pioneers, three players registered double-digits in points with freshman Diana Neves's team-high 14. Freshman Carlie Lakey nearly picked up a double-double with 13 points and nine boards. Sophomore guard Shantae Shank scored 12 points, 10 coming in the second half.

Newberry next plays on Wednesday at Eleazer Arena at 6 p.m. when Catawba College comes to town for the Lady Indian's seventh conference match.
