Box Score

CLINTON - The Newberry College men's soccer team scored the game's first two goals to negate a late goal by Presbyterian College as the Indians defeated the Blue Hose, 2-1, before a crowd of 323 at Martin Stadium on Tuesday evening.

Newberry elevates its record to 5-3-0 overall and 2-1-0 in South Atlantic Conference play. The result gave Presbyterian its first loss of the campaign, as the Blue Hose fall to 4-1-1 overall, and 0-1-1 in the SAC.

All three of the goals came in the second stanza with the game squared at 0-0 at the conclusion of the first 45 minutes.

Newberry's Edsel Rudder (Arima, Trinidad) scored the first goal of the game on a header from a free kick taken by Debola Ogunseye (Lagos, Nigeria in the 57th minute. Rudder was fouled along the left wing to set up the opportunity, and would provide the opener with a flicked header off Ogunseye's driven ball.

Less than 10 minutes later, Ogunseye picked up what would turn out to be the game-winning goal. Ogunseye ran on to a long pass into space from sophomore defender Jeff Bell along the right channel. Ogunseye avoided the pursuit of multiple Blue Hose defenders, and the forward tucked the ball into the upper right corner to give Newberry the 2-0 advantge.

Presbyterian continued to garner its chances in the game, but could not find the net until Bennett Cope found Jay Stewart just outside the 18-yard box. Stewart took advantage of a square ball by Cope and placed the ball between the pipes to pull the Blue Hose within one with just over seven minutes left.

Presbyterian outshot the Indians 26-7 in the contest. Newberry's defensive effort was led by senior goalkeeper Bryan Linn (Safety Harbor, Fla.) along with starting defenders Bell, Robbie Getsinger (Charleston, S.C.), Jeff Hinshaw (Athens, Tenn.) and William Koch (Greenville, S.C.) as well as substitute Brandon Baker (Conway, S.C).

The Indians' next action comes on Monday, Sept. 25, when they journey to Anderson University for a 7 p.m. start. Presbyterian next travels to Wingate, N.C. for the Wingate University Tournament.
