Women's Soccer earns road tie at No. 20 Catawba, 1-1, in double overtime

Box Score

SALISBURY, N.C. - Catawba College got a goal just over a minute from the end of regulation play to earn a 1-1 tie with visiting Newberry College in South Atlantic Conference women's soccer action on Saturday afternoon at Frock Field. The Catawba Indians, ranked 20th in NCAA II, improve to 5-1-1 overall and 0-0-1 in the SAC, while Newberry's record goes to 4-3-1 and 0-1-1 in conference action.

Newberry got on the board first after drawing a penalty kick. Brooke Tumblin (Florence, S.C.) took a shot that was blocked by a Catawba defender. As two players pursued the ball, bounding outside the penalty box, Tumblin was pushed down to draw the foul. Inga Woiwode (El Paso, Texas) stepped up and made the penalty kick in the 16th minute for the 1-0 lead.

Catawba had a goal late in the first half off a corner kick called back for a foul against the goalkeeper and another early in the second half off a hand ball. Catawba would break through near the end of regulation as Leigh Telzrow scored at the 88:48 mark. Neither team could find the net in the overtime periods.

Newberry head coach Juan Pablo Favero said he was pleased that his side has played well against top-level competition this season, along with good results during the Lady Indians' current three game unbeaten streak.

"I am very pleased with the effort and attitude the team had for 110 minutes today," Favero said. "To come into the defending SAC champions' home, and force them to go away from what they are comfortable doing says a lot about how far the program has come."

"The fact that we let a win slip from our fingers with so little time left is bitter, but the way the team performed the entire game, and the mental strength they showed in overtime is very sweet. In the past, we would have been thrilled with this kind of result, especially on the road, but it was a great sign to see in the eyes of the players that they are not satisfied with the tie and they are hungry for more. We continue to become a stronger team every time out and that only builds our confidence about what this season has in store for us," Favero added.

The Lady Indians play two key South Atlantic Conference matches this week. On Wednesday, Newberry will look to earn their first conference victory of the season as the Lady Indians travel to Clinton to face off against archrival Presbyterian College for a 7 p.m. kickoff. On Saturday, the Lady Indians host the Bulldogs of Wingate University. Kickoff will be at 4 p.m.
