Newberry Volleyball to share Brazilian experience with students

NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Newberry College Lady Indians volleyball team invites all students, faculty, and fans to the “Scarlet and Grey Game.”   Head coach Dr. Gylton Da Matta has planned an interactive volleyball experience for fans with an intra-squad volleyball game to be held at Eleazer Arena on Tuesday August 29 at 7 p.m.

After the match, Dr. Da Matta has organized a slide show from the Lady Indians recent trip to Brazil.  The Lady Indians studied the culture of Brazilian volleyball.  Playing in exhibition matches, watching international matches, and participating in new conditioning and training exercises, the Lady Indians would like to share their unforgettable international experience.  The slide show will start at 8 p.m.

After the slide show, Dr. Da Matta and the Lady Indians invite all students who are able to join in the game of volleyball.  Dr. Da Matta, assistant coach Matt Hadley, and the rest of the coaching staff will play and help teach the game to students. 
The Lady Indians opened up their season at the USC-Aiken Invitational this past weekend.  A rough start to the season, the Lady Indians finished the weekend 0-3 after some tough matches.

Newberry started the tournament Friday evening with a 5:00 p.m. tilt versus Limestone College.  The Lady Indians lost in three games, but mounted 26 points and 28 points in the first and third games respectively.  Cara Coleman led Newberry with eight kills and two aces on the serve.  Freshman Lorena Maia finished the match with 28 total attacks recording kills on six.

In the second match of the USC-Aiken Invitational, Newberry College battled with Flagler College (0-1).  Once again ousted in three games, the Lady Indians nearly rallied for a third game win, falling short 32-30.  Juniors Coleman and Laurie Barman combined for 13 kills and senior setter Jessica Lopez set up 15 assists.

In the final match on Saturday, host USC-Aiken (2-0) beat Newberry in three games.  The Lady Indians stuck with the Lady Pacers in the first game before falling 30-20.  USC-Aiken rolled on to 30-15 and 30-6 wins in games two and three.  Barman and Maia each notched six kills and Lopez finished with 17 assists.  For the tournament, Lopez totaled 45 assists.

The Lady Indians next travel to Banner Elk, N.C. for the Lees-McRae Volleyball Tournament.  A four game tournament, Sept. 2 Newberry faces St. Andrews Presbyterian College at 9 a.m. and Fairmont State University at 2 p.m.  On Sept. 3 the Lady Indians go up against Lees-McRae College at 9 a.m. and Francis Marion University at 1 p.m.
