Lady Indians split season opener with Brevard

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

NEWBERRY, S.C. - Sarah Lynch (Pompano Beach, Fla.) hit the game-tying home run and Jenny Raines (Blythewood, S.C.) produced the game-winning hit in the bottom of the seventh giving Newberry an 8-7, game-two win over Brevard College.  The Lady Indians dropped the season opener 7-3.  After the split, both teams hold 1-1 records.

"We played tight and back on our heels in the first game, so it was nice to jump out early in that second game," said head coach Joe Elston.  "We let them get back in the game, but we did a good job of not giving up and fighting back.  Courtney and Sarah really came through and played very well throughout."

Kat Hammond (Irmo, S.C.) scored the game-winning run in the nightcap after two Brevard errors helped her to third base.  For Lynch, it was her second home run of the game as she also drove in a two-run shot in the first inning.  As a team, the Lady Indians jumped out to a three-run lead after two innings, but Brevard was able to fight back and even took a 7-5 lead heading into bottom of the fifth.

Shortstop Courtney Lindler (Irmo, S.C.) nearly hit for the cycle, excluding a triple, as she put together a 3-for-4 batting performance.  Lynch and Raines, who combined for six runs batted in, also hit 3-for-4 each.  For Brevard, C.J. Jascur (Arden, N.C.) went 3-for-4 with three RBI.  Newberry pitcher McKenzie Phillips (Wallace, N.C.) picked up her first collegiate win, while Aimee Rogers (Chesapeake, Va.) was credited with the loss.

Newberry fell behind early in game one and couldn't overcome 13 hits from Brevard.  Lindler hit a triple scoring Jessica Jackson (Batesburg, S.C.) and later scored herself after an RBI, sac bunt from Ashley Marine (Peachtree City, Ga.) in the bottom of the fourth, making the score 4-2 in favor of the Tornados.  Brevard responded by tacking on runs in each of the next three innings.

Lindler paced the Lady Indians going 2-for-3 with two runs scored, while Marine added two runs batted in.  Abrams Buckheister (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) and Heidi Morgan (Canton, N.C.) led Brevard by hitting 3-for-4 and 3-for-3, respectively.  Christina Kirby (Delmar, Del.) was credited with the loss, while Stef Giannetti (Coral Springs, Fla.) picked up her first win of the season.

The Lady Indians travel to Georgia this weekend for the Georgia College & State University Tournament.  While there, they will face Pfeiffer, USC Aiken, Georgia College & State, and Columbus State.  Newberry's match-up with Pfeiffer is scheduled for February 10 at 6 p.m.  Brevard heads to Presbyterian College on February 12 for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
