HICKORY, N.C. - Newberry came out of intermission on fire, outscoring Lenoir-Rhyne 25-8 over eight minutes to motor past the Bears, 85-50, in women's basketball action at Shuford Gymnasium Wednesday night. The Lady Indians recorded their first conference road win of the season in grand fashion, holding its third SAC opponent to 50 points or less this season.
Newberry improves to 15-11 and 6-7 in the South Atlantic Conference and remains in contention for a home first-round tournament game and the potential for a share of third place.
Lenoir-Rhyne drops to 3-10 in the SAC and 10-11 overall. L-R and Catawba share last place in the league after both teams lost at home tonight.
After a 33-28 halftime lead, Newberry went to work quickly. Tonique Frasier (Walterboro, S.C.) scored 13 of Newberry's next 16 points, five of those on a single possession. Frasier converted a fast break basket on which she was fouled. Her free throw attempt was rebounded by Courtney Snowden (Augusta, Ga.), whose putback was no good. Frasier grabbed the miss, made the shot, and was fouled again. Her free throw was true, and the Lady Indians led 51-33.
Newberry extended its lead to 35 at with 58 seconds left in the game, where the margin remained until the final horn. Newberry's margin hovered around 30 for most of the final six minutes.
The Indian defense limited L-R to 14.8% shooting from the floor in the second period, while the offense scored 52 points, its highest second half total of the year.
Frasier tied a career high with 22 points on eight-for-14 shooting and six free throws. Ashlee Wright (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) and Monica Alexander (Norcross, Ga.) notched 18 and 15, respectively. Tonya Deese (Newberry, S.C.) just missed her third double-double in four games, recording 10 rebounds and eight points.
Shannon Jones (Warrenton, N.C.) was the only Bear in double figures, scoring 11.
Newberry hosts Mars Hill on senior day Saturday at 2 p.m., while Lenoir-Rhyne will host Tusculum with a 6 p.m. start.
