Box Score 2 NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry softball team fell at home today against Limestone College in doubleheader action at the Newberry Softball Field. The Lady Indians (2-5) were held to just three hits in game one, as they fell 5-1. Adjustments were made in the second game, but Newberry couldn't get the split as Limestone (2-2) picked up the victory, 5-2.
In game one, Limestone jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after the first inning, but Newberry came back in their half of the inning to even the score thanks to an RBI double from Ashley Marine (Peachtree City, Ga.). The Saints tacked on another run in the second after Niki Woodberry shot an RBI single through the left side, scoring Brittney Owen. Newberry was held to just two more hits for the remainder of the game.
The Saints added three insurance runs in the sixth, but the Lady Indians couldn't respond. Jennifer Casement picked up the win for Limestone, while Christina Kirby (Delmar, Del.) (0-3) was charged with the loss.
After several sub par performances from the first-string, the Newberry coaching staff decided to pull the starters and go with subs in game two to try and find a winning group. The decision was made so the Newberry reserves could have an opportunity to perform and show what they can do on the field. The Lady Indian subs played with heart in the nightcap, but couldn't overcome an early five-run deficit.
Limestone grabbed a run in the first inning and followed it up with four more in the second. Newberry jumped on the scoreboard in the fourth after left fielder Rachelle Kenworthy (Riley, Kan.) started the inning with a double down the left field line. Catcher Jenny Raines (Blythewood, S.C.) followed with a single and first baseman Crystal Renfro (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Kenworthy. The Lady Indians, who were poised to rally, started off the seventh with singles from pitcher Stephanie Monette (Conway, S.C.) and center fielder Amy Jarrell (Dover, Del.). McKenzie Phillips (Wallace, N.C.) drove in Monette, but it wasn't enough.
Candice Evans earned the win for Limestone, while Monette (0-1) was charged with her first loss of the season. Both teams scattered seven hits apiece throughout the game, a huge improvement for Newberry.
Up next for the Lady Indians is a doubleheader with North Greenville University on February 18. Game one action is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. Limestone is set to face Lees-McRae College on February 22 at 2 p.m.
