Lady Indians pick up day-one win over Pfeiffer at GC&SU tournament

Box Score

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – A two-run fifth inning and a three-run sixth inning sealed the deal for the Lady Indians, giving them a 7-2 decision over Pfeiffer University this evening at the Georgia College & State University Lady Bobcat Softball Classic.  Senior catcher Sarah Lynch (Pompano Beach, Fla.) launched a double to left center scoring Courtney Lindler (Irmo, S.C.) as the go-ahead run in the bottom of the fifth.  Newberry improves to 2-1 with the victory.

The Lady Indians jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning after Rachelle Kenworthy (Riley, Kan.) shot a single into right field scoring Christina Kirby (Delmar, Del.), followed by an RBI single from Jessica Jackson (Batesburg, S.C.).  The Falcons evened the score in the fourth, but Newberry responded in the fifth and sixth and never looked back.

Freshman McKenzie Phillips (Wallace, N.C.) pitched three innings of relief for her second win of the season (2-0).  She, along with starter Kirby, allowed just three Pfeiffer hits.  Lynch finished the game with three RBI, including a two-run double in the sixth.  Lindler recorded two hits and scored two runs.

Newberry hits the field again tomorrow for the final day of the GC&SU tournament.  The team is scheduled to play USC Aiken at 9 a.m., Georgia College & State at 1 p.m., and Columbus State at 7 p.m., weather permitting.  Pfeiffer played in tonight’s nightcap against the host school and are set to play Mars Hill tomorrow at 11 a.m.
