Newberry women's basketball rolls, 88-59, over Converse

NEWBERRY - All eleven Lady Indians that saw action Wednesday night contributed in the points department as Newberry College ran past Converse College, 88-59, in women's basketball action at Eleazer Arena.  Newberry (12-8) nearly doubled the rebound total of Converse (4-20), and capitalized on 32 second chance points.

The Lady Indians remain perfect (6-0) at home this season.

Five Lady Indians scored in double figures as a seven-point halftime edge expanded to as many as 30 in the final margin.  Forward Tonique Frasier (Walterboro, S.C.) led Newberry's cause with 14 points, followed closely by Monica Alexander (Norcross, Ga.) with 13.  Anita Bulcher (Russia, Ohio) and Ashlee Wright (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) scored 11 each, and Tonya Deese (Newberry, S.C.) contributed 10 points.  Deese's 12 boards made her third double-double of the season and eighth in her career.

Converse led the game on a pair of occasions in the first five minutes, but Newberry eased ahead on a Tygress Hope (Hephzibah, Ga.) jumper.  The All-Stars tied the contest at 17, but Wright's mid-range jumpshot put Newberry on top for good.  Newberry gained a ten-point advantage with 1:58 left in the period, but Converse fought back to a 38-31 deficit at the break.

The Lady Indians used a 18-2 stretch over four minutes to widen the gap to 66-41.  Two trifectas by Laura Marquardt (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) and four points by Alexander keyed the run.

Carla Kantara (London, England) and Syndney Brown (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) were the only All-Stars in double figures, notching 16 and 10 points, respectively.

Newberry looks to stay undefeated at home this Saturday, taking on conference opponent Carson-Newman at 2 p.m.  Converse plays at St. Andrews Presbyterian College next Wednesday.
