Lady Indians dominate Patriots, move to 10-0

NEWBERRY - Newberry women's basketball continued it's undefeated start to the 2006-07 campaign improving to 10-0 with a decimating 63-42 victory over the Patriots of Francis Marion University on Saturday afternoon.

The scarlet and gray's 10-game winning streak is one shy of the school record of 11 straight set in the 1987-88 season.

Newberry was led once again by junior forward Tonique Frasier. The Walterboro native accumulated 22 points on 9-for-17 shooting from the floor along with nine rebounds.

Francis Marion (3-7) kept the game relatively close through most of the first half staying within striking distance. After closing to within five points after two Brittany Young free throws at the 4:42 mark in the first, Francis Marion was blitzed by a Newberry 13-4 run to end the half.

During the 13-4 run, Tonique Frasier had four points, an assist and a steal while junior point guard Monica Alexander dished out three assists supplementing two points and a steal.

With a 36-22 lead at the break, Newberry kept the intensity up with 64.7 percent shooting from the floor in the second half. The Lady Indians cashed in on 11-of-17 shots from the field in the second frame and never let Francis Marion within single digits.

Though Frasier's 22 points led all scorers, three other Lady Indians tallied at least eight points. Monica Alexander was just a point and an assist away from a double-double, scoring nine and dishing out nine assists in 28 minutes.

Ashley Marine came off the bench and provided a spark from the outside, nailing 3-of-5 three pointers for nine points as well.

Junior guard Ashlee Wright continued her solid play with eight points and six rebounds.

Newberry exhibited a high-octane game outscoring FMU in fast break points, 21-2, and points of turnovers, 21-14.

Still dominating the paint, the Lady Indians have yet to be out rebounding, downing Francis Marion on the glass, 40-22.

For the Patriots, Brittany Young led the way with 11 points on 3-of-8 shooting from the floor. Renee Guilliams also chipped in eight points.

Newberry will be on a 14-day hiatus for the winter break, but return to the hardwood of Eleazer Arena on December 30 for a 2 p.m. match against Shorter College before opening up South Atlantic Conference play against Wingate University on January 3 at Eleazer Arena.
