SPARTANBURG - The Newberry College Lady Indian basketball team continued to blast through the competition in the pre-conference schedule, mowing down Converse College 77-41 at Tom and Tracy Hannah Gym Tuesday night.
The scarlet and gray received double digit scoring efforts from four sources and shot nearly 55 percent from the floor.
The All-Stars (0-5) kept the game close in the first five minutes, drawing to within three points after Converse center Lauren Mueller capitalized on an Ashlee Wright foul netting two free throws.
With the score 13-10, Newberry (4-0) blitzed the All-Stars with a 14-4 run capped off by a pair of Ashlee Wright free throws. Newberry finished the first half with a 20-point lead, 44-24.
In the second stanza, head coach Jason Brink continued to season his bench. A confused and panicked All-Star team shot just 17 percent in the second half and Newberry forced 26 turnovers on the evening.
Out of the 77 points scored by the Lady Indians, 32 percent came from the bench. Freshman guard Brennen Long scored 12 points in 20 minutes, going a perfect 6-6 at the free throw line.
Sophomore forward Laura Marquardt showcased a deft shooting touch with six points in 16 minutes on 3-4 shooting from the floor.
Though the bench contributed, the two Lady Indian stars sparlked. Junior Tonique Frasier and sophomore Carnicha Bellinger each totaled 14 points in 28 minutes of play a piece. The duo combined for 13 rebounds and four steals.
Starting point guard Monica Alexander racked up nine points and four assists to go along with a pair of steals. Junior guard Tosha Goodman provided 10 points as well.
