Box Score JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. Cara Coleman had another solid performance Friday evening, recording 18 kills and hitting .302 with two block solos, but Northern Kentucky University still managed to slip by the Indian volleyball squad with a 3-2 victory at the Carson-Newman Tournament. Game scores were 22-30, 30-27, 30-23, 17-30, 8-15.
The loss for Newberry (4-2) ends a four-match win streak while the Norse (6-1) picked up their second win at the tournament. Jamie Foster-Mann recorded nine kills for Newberry, hitting .364 with three block assists but the breakthrough player of the match was senior setter Alicia Khoury as she recorded a season high six kills, hitting .400 with 42 assists, 13 digs and one service ace. Kristin Pulone added 19 digs and a block solo in the defensive effort for the Indians.
Tonight was the first team that really ran a very quick offense that we have seen this year, said Indian head coach Dr. Gylton Da Matta. This was a big test for our blocking game and I think we played well in blocking, but our serve receive did not match well with their servers. It was a great match and our players stepped up tremendously throughout the match, especially playing back to back matches today.
Pulone led the offensive in game one with four kills as Coleman and Laurie Barman, in her season and Newberry premiere, each added three kills. Libero Christy Stegall made seven digs for Newberry but Northern Kentucky took an early lead in the game and Newberry couldnt catch up, falling in game one 30-22.
The Indians fought back in game two as Coleman led the offensive charge with six kills, hitting .667 (6 K, 0 E, 9 TA) and took part in the defensive effort, recording one block solo. Foster-Mann was on fire in game two from the serve position, recording three service aces in the game. Jessica Lipsi had four kills and six digs for the Indians as Newberry outhit NKU, .273 to .240 with the 30-27 game two win.
The Scarlet and Gray continued to roll in game three, outhitting Northern Kentucky .302 to .137. Khoury stepped up in the game, hitting .400 with two kills while Coleman hit .333, adding four kills. Pulone led the defensive end with seven digs as Newberry took a 2-1 match lead with a 30-23 game three victory.
The tide turned the Norse way in game four as the Indians playing in their eighth consecutive game of the day began to take its toll on Newberry. NKU hit .242 while only allowing Newberry to hit .056 in the game as Northern Kentucky served up nine service aces in the game. It was the Cara Coleman show once again as the middle hitter recorded four kills and one block solo.
The Indians kept it close in game five but exhaustion finally took its toll as NKU won 15-8, taking the match 3-2. Newberry couldnt stop NKUs Jamie Eisenmenger in the game as she recorded five of the Norse nine kills. NKU hit an impressive .318 while Newberry hit .000. Pulone recorded a block solo midway through the game in an attempt to stop the Norse momentum, but it was too late.
Newberry has another back-to-back schedule Saturday, facing the University of Charleston (W.Va.) at 1 p.m. and then taking on Christian Brothers University immediately following the Charleston match.
