Tusculum sweeps Newberry softball

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Jessica Taylor's (Greeneville, Tenn.) two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning of game two broke a 2-2 tie to lead Tusculum College to a South Atlantic Conference softball sweep over Newberry College Saturday afternoon at Edmonds Field.

The Pioneers took the opener 3-1 and won the nightcap 4-2.

Game 1 - Tusculum 3, Newberry 1

Tusculum scored runs in the second, third and fifth innings, and held off a Newberry rally in the seventh, escaping a bases-loaded, one-out jam.

Taylor was a factor in two of TC's three runs, scoring on a Laura Menchaca (Clarksville, Tenn.) single in the second and driving in junior Nicole Ringwall (Rose Hill, Kan.) on a base hit in the fifth.

In the Newberry seventh, Ashleigh Anderson (Barnwell, S.C.) and Jessica Jackson (Batesburg, S.C.) led off with singles and with one out, a walk to Sarah Lynch (Pompano Beach, Fla.) loaded the bases.  A single by Christina Kirby (Delmar, Del.) brought the Lady Indians to within 3-1, but Tusculum starter Sarah Moder (Glendale, Ariz.) escaped further damage by inducing two ground balls.

Moder improves to 11-7 by allowing six hits and one earned run.  Kirby falls to 10-14.

Game 2 - Tusculum 4, Newberry 2

The Pioneers got on the board in the first on a failed double steal, allowing Jeannie Keebler (Port Orange, Fla.) to score.  Newberry answered right back in the top of the second when Kayce McLeod (Newberry, S.C.) stole third and advanced home on an errant throw.

A Jackson RBI double in the fifth put the Lady Indians on top 2-1 until the TC half of the sixth.  Pam Jones (Crawfordville, Fla.) led off the inning with a single and pinch-runner Candace Allwardt (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) scored on a Newberry error to knot the score at 2-2.  Taylor followed with a two-run shot to left-center putting Tusculum on top for good.

Monica Funigiello (Naples, Fla.) picked up the win (7-4) while McLeod took the loss (6-12).

Tusculum (22-15, 5-3 SAC) returns to action Sunday, hosting Catawba College at 1 p.m.  Newberry (16-26, 2-8 SAC) plays arch-rival Presbyterian College Wednesday at home at 2 p.m.
