Softball wins first conference game in split with Catawba

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SALISBURY, N.C. - Catawba and visiting Newberry split a South Atlantic Conference softball doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at Whitley Field.  Catawba took the opener 2-1, while Newberry prevailed 2-0 in the second game.  Catawba now stands at 19-19 overall and 2-2 in the SAC, while Newberry is 15-21 and 1-3.

Catawba grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first game, benefiting from a Newberry error.  Lyndsey Gay (Cleveland, N.C.) had led off with a single and was sacrificed to second.  She scored on Jacqueline White's (Mt. Ulla, N.C.) ground ball as the throw to get Gay at third was wide of the mark, allowing her to score. Stacey Handy (Advance, N.C.) gave Catawba a 2-0 lead in the fifth, driving home Gay with a two-out single.

Newberry had only three hits after a leadoff single by Jessica Jackson (Batesburg, S.C.) in the first, but all three came in the sixth as Newberry cut the lead to 2-1.  With two outs, Sarah Lynch (Pompano Beach, Fla.) delivered a RBI single, but Courtney Lindler (Irmo, SC) was cut down at third to end the frame.

Newberry manufactured a run to open game two.  Jackson led off with a single, was sacrificed to second, stole third and scored on a fly out by Lynch.  That would be the only run Kayce McLeod (Newberry, S.C.) would need as she tossed a complete game, five-hit shutout.  A two-out single by Lindler in the fifth gave the visitors a 2-0 edge.

Catawba had two base-runners on in the same inning only once, which came in the sixth as Gay and Stacey Handy had two-out singles, but Catawba was unable to score.  Christina Kirby (Delmar, Del.) had two hits for Newberry, while Stacey Handy and Katie Phelps (Prince Frederick, Md.) had two hits for Catawba in game two.

Newberry faces Erskine in Due West Friday afternoon at 2:30.
