Box Score 2 JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - The Carson-Newman Lady Eagles opened South Atlantic Conference play with 3-2 and 7-1 wins over the visiting Lady Indians of Newberry Saturday afternoon at the C-N Softball Complex.
Lisa Rogers (Rossville, Ga.) put C-N on the board in a big way in the second as she smashed a homerun to right field to make it 1-0. The Lady Indians got the run back in the third when Sarah Lynch (Pompano Beach, Fla.) singled to center field to bring home Jessica Jackson (Batesburg, S.C.).
Carson-Newman took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third when Rogers doubled to centerfield to score Erin Rutherford (Knoxville, Tenn.). C-N added another run in the fourth when Hillary Hammond (Chattanooga, Tenn.) scored all the way from first base on a failed pick-off attempt.
The Lady Indians cut the C-N lead to 3-2 in the fifth when Rebecca Backman (Columbia, S.C.) hit a sacrifice fly to center to bring Jackson home. But Newberry could get no closer in the game.
The second game would not be as close as the Lady Eagles used a six-run second inning to take a big lead. The inning was highlighted by a triple by Megan McNutt (Knoxville, Tenn.) and a two-run single by Rutherford. The final C-N run came in the fourth when Rogers had an RBI double. The lone Newberry run came in the seventh when Lynch doubled and scored on a single by Christina Kirby (Delmar, Del.).
The Lady Eagles improve to 27-4 on the season while Newberry falls to 14-20. The Lady Indians compete next at North Greenville Monday afternoon at 2 p.m.
