Box Score 2 GAFFNEY, S.C. - The Limestone College softball team (2-10) was swept in a doubleheader with Newberry College (7-10) on Tuesday. Newberry won 9-4 and 2-0, and is currently on a four-game win streak.
Game one was a pitcher's duel in the early innings, but Newberry broke things open in the fourth. Sarah Lynch (Pompano Beach, Fla.) led the frame off with an infield single. Back-to-back triples from Rebecca Backman (Columbia, S.C.) and Kayce McLeod (Newberry, S.C.) plated two runs. Christina Kirby (Delmar, Del.) followed with a double to center to make the score 3-0.
In the bottom of the fourth, consecutive singles from Brittany Owen and Keisha Powell gave the Lady Saints a run. After a Newberry error kept the inning alive for Limestone, singles from Missy Hampson and Keisha Thompson gave Limestone a 4-3 lead.
In the fifth, Newberry scored three unearned runs to take a 6-4 lead. The Indians pushed their lead to 9-4 with RBI singles from Courtney Lindler (Irmo, S.C.) and Backman and an RBI double from Lynch in the sixth inning.
Newberry’s Christina Kirby (4-5) threw an outstanding game allowing four runs on four hits, all in the fourth inning. Keisha Powell (1-5) was tagged with the loss allowing five earned runs on 10 hits in seven innings.
In game two, the Indians plated an unearned run in the fourth on two hits and an error. That would be all the support that McLeod (3-5) needed. McLeod allowed no runs on four hits while striking out seven in the complete game win. Newberry added another unearned run in the seventh to cap the scoring at 2-0.
Freshman hurler Samantha Weaver (1-1) tossed an outstanding game, but was tagged with the loss. Weaver allowed two runs on four hits and two walks in seven innings.
Newberry plays its next contest Sunday afternoon against USC Upstate at 2 p.m., a doubleheader that was postponed due to rain earlier in the season. Limestone will return to action on Wednesday in a contest with Lake Superior State University at 2:00 p.m. in Gaffney.
