Carson-Newman stays unbeaten at home; defeats Newberry 73-58

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. -  The Carson-Newman Lady Eagles avenged an earlier loss to Newberry and snapped a four-game Indian win streak as they won 73-58 Saturday night at Holt Field House.

With the win, the Lady Eagles remain atop the South Atlantic Conference (SAC) standings with a 7-1 record and 17-4 overall mark. C-N has won seven games in a row. The Lady Indians fall to 14-7, 4-4 in the SAC.

Newberry was led in scoring by Laura Banda (Holcomb, Kans.) who had 11 points. Carnicha Bellinger (Greenville, S.C.) and Tonya Deese (Newberry, S.C.) each scored 10 points for the Lady Indians.

Brooke Johnson (Seymour, Tenn.) led all scorers with 21 points and also added 12 rebounds. Tiffany Parker (Newnan, Ga.) and Brittaney Gooch (Franklin, Ky.) had 14 points each.

The game was close for most of the first 20 minutes of play. The Lady Eagles extended the lead to 13 points, the biggest lead of the first half, when LaToya Davison (College Park, Ga.) scored on a lay-up with 2:57 remaining. The Lady Eagles went into the locker room at halftime with a 37-26 lead.

The Lady Indians made a run at Carson-Newman to begin the second half. Newberry cut the lead to 41-38 on a three-pointer by Taquala Cooks (Lithonia, Ga.) with 16:03 remaining. But the Lady Eagles answered the scoring spurt by Newberry with a 9-0 run later on to take a 58-44 lead on a Gooch lay-up. Newberry never recovered from the scoring run and Carson-Newman went on for a 73-58 win.

The Lady Eagles play at Lenoir-Rhyne at 6 p.m. on Feb. 9. Newberry hosts Catawba at 6 p.m. Feb. 9.
