Box Score 2 AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Augusta State won its fourth straight game by defeating Newberry 5-3 and 5-4 in NCAA softball action Wednesday afternoon. With the wins, the Jaguars move to 9-3 on the season while the Indians fall to 3-7.
Amy Dumas moved to a perfect 6-0 as the Jags freshman pitched seven innings of two-hit ball to help ASU defeat Newberry in game one. Jessica Matta led the Jags, going 2-for-2 with two runs scored, while Dumas helped herself with a two-run single in the first inning. Junior Tiffany Pate also chipped in with an RBI and two runs scored.
Matta continued her hot hitting into game two as her 3-for-4 effort helped the Jags defeat Newberry in eight innings. ASU rallied from a 2-0 lead in the fifth as an error and RBI singles by shortstop Anna Tedder and centerfielder Courtney Smith help give ASU a 3-2 lead.
With the score now 4-2, Newberry tied the game with two in the top of the seventh inning courtesy of a two-run double by shortstop Courtney Lindler (Irmo, S.C.).
However ASU scored the game winning run on a catcher overthrow to first base, scoring pinch hitter Ashley Roberts from second base.
After going 0-for-2 in game one, Lindler came alive at the plate, batting successfully in three of four at bats, driving in two runs and scoring once herself. Sarah Lynch (Pompano Beach, Fla.) also went three-for-four in the nightcap.
Newberry undertakes its next action Saturday at the Lander Tournament in Greenwood against the host Bearcats, Wheeling Jesuit, and Mars Hill. Augusta State will continue its home stand Saturday when the Jaguars host Presbyterian at 1:00 p.m.
