Box Score 2 NEWBERRY, S.C. - Lander pitcher Jenna Kellett (Simpsonville, S.C.) remained perfect and threw a three-hit shutout in the opening game of Thursday's doubleheader at Newberry College, and three Bearcats had two RBI each in the 8-2 nightcap in favor of the visitors.
Lander (6-5) scored two runs in the third off the bats of Lib Harris (Calhoun Falls, S.C.) and Colleen Leggieri (Greenwood, S.C.). Harris doubled with two aboard, and Leggieri sacrificed to left field to score the second run. Leggieri drove in another run in the fifth and scored the final tally in the seventh.
Lander's Keri Davis (Norway, S.C.) hit the first home run out of the Newberry softball complex this season, scoring two runs in the third. The Bearcats held a 5-0 advantage going into the bottom of the inning before Newberry got on the scoreboard. Jessica Jackson (Batesburg, S.C.) and Courtney Lindler (Irmo, S.C.) both singled and stole second in consecutive at bats. Lindler's single drove in Jackson. Christina Kirby (Delmar, Del.) reached on an error and Lindler scored the Indians' second and final run.
Bearcat catcher Melissa Ryals (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) drove in a run in both the fourth and sixth innings. Heather Bishop (Lexington, S.C.) singled for a RBI in the fifth frame.
Ashlea Burdette (Iva, S.C.) was awarded the win for Lander in game two before leaving with a dislocated finger. Kirby and Kayce McLeod (Newberry, S.C.) now both have 1-2 records for the Indians.
Newberry hosts its fourth straight doubleheader this Saturday versus St. Andrews Presbyterian College at 1 p.m. Lander hosts UNC Pembroke at the same gametime.
