Sweet Revenge: Lady Indians payback PC 80-74

CLINTON - Newberry College's freshman forward Carnicha Bellinger (Greenville, S.C.) led four Lady Indians in double figures with a game-high 18 points as Newberry avenged an earlier loss to Presbyterian by winning 80-74 in South Atlantic Conference women's basketball action Wednesday night at the Ross E. Templeton Center.

Newberry improves its record to 15-9 and 5-6 in the SAC.  Fifteen wins are the most since the Lady Indians recorded a 15-12 campaign in 1988-89, and the mark ties for the third-most wins in the program's history.

In the first half, Newberry jumped to an early 10-2 lead before the Blue Hose responded with an 8-0 run to tie the game at 10 with 15:35 remaining. PC's sophomore guard Brittany Carroll (Dunn, N.C.) gave the Blue Hose their first lead at 15-12 (13:30 mark) on one of her three first-half three-point field goals. PC would hold the lead for the rest of the half and lead 41-31 at intermission.

In the second half, Newberry staged a late 17-3 rally to retake the lead at 66-64 off a Bellinger layup with 6:05 remaining in the game. The Lady Indians would push the lead to as many as seven points at 75-68 on a layup by freshman forward Tonique Frasier (Walterboro, S.C.). PC would trim the lead to 77-74 on a pair of free throws from junior forward Rebecca Wessinger (Laurens, S.C.), but Newberry would seal the game at the free throw line, hitting five of six in the final 16 seconds.

Newberry turned its fortunes around by shooting an impressive 51.5% from the floor in the final stanza, along with making 13 of 21 shots at the charity stripe.

Frasier notched a double-double with 14 points to go along with 10 rebounds. Monica Alexander (Norcross, Ga.) and Taquala Cooks (Lithonia, Ga.) both had 12 points apiece.

Carroll and Wessinger led the Blue Hose with 15 points apiece, while Anna Sheppard and Cameron Cook chipped in with 14 and 10, respectively.

Newberry seeks to tie its second-most successful season Saturday at home in a 2 p.m. affair against Tusculum College.
