Lady Indians romp Morris College, 80-34

NEWBERRY - The Newberry women's basketball team used 21 steals and 37 points off turnovers to run by Morris College, 80-34, tonight in Eleazer Arena.  After starting the game on a 10-0 run, the Lady Indians never looked back as they outscored their opponent 45-7 in the first half of play.  Newberry improves to 4-3 overall, while Morris falls to 2-7.

Sophomore guard Chance Stewart (Rougemont, N.C.) paced Newberry in the first half with 11 points, while forwards Tonique Frasier (Walterboro, S.C.) and Tygress Hope (Hephzibah, Ga.) added nine and eight, respectively.  Freshman Anita Bulcher (Houston, Ohio) pulled down eight of her game-high 16 rebounds in the opening period.  The Lady Indians forced 22 first-half turnovers.

Morris came out of the locker room with more energy as they found better looks from the floor, but the Newberry pressure was too much to make any significant runs.  The quick pace of the game doomed the Lady Hornets, as seven Lady Indians finished the game with two or more steals.

For the game, Newberry was led by Stewart's 15, while guard Monica Alexander (Norcross, Ga.) contributed 11, nine in the second half, and four steals.  She, along with Ashlee Wright (Myrtle Beach, S.C.), ended the game with four dimes a piece.  Frasier and Hope chipped in nine each and Bulcher led the Newberry rebounding charge with 16.  Morris was led by Christen Cooper (Lumberton, N.C.) with eight, while Sheena Jones (Bennettsville, S.C.) and Latoya Singleton (North Charleston, S.C.) pulled down 11 and 10 boards, respectively.

Next up for the Lady Indians is a home battle with Allen University this Saturday, December 10, at 2 p.m.  The Newberry men will also be in action as they take on Erskine College at 4 p.m.  The Lady Hornets head to Knoxville, Tenn., for a December 10 match-up with Knoxville College.  Tip off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
