Newberry breaks Tusculum jinx; defeats Pioneers 73-67 in OT

GREENEVILLE, TENN. - Newberry College freshman Tonique Frasier (Walterboro, S.C.) posted her third straight double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds and the Lady Indians outscored Tusculum College 7-2 in the final 1:32 of overtime to win 73-67 Saturday afternoon in South Atlantic Conference women's basketball action from Alpine Arena.

The win by Newberry (11-6, 2-3 SAC) ends an eight-game losing streak to the Pioneers (6-12, 1-4 SAC), dating back to the 1999-00 season, and snapped a three-game skid overall.

The teams combined to shoot 34.6 percent with 29 turnovers in the first half.  TC took a 29-25 lead into the halftime break after sophomore Chassity Martin (Salem, Va.) scored the last five points in the opening period.

The Pioneers led for the first 8:37 of the second half before senior Laura Banda's (Holcomb, Kan.) layup gave the Lady Indians a 44-43 advantage.

Neither team led by more than three for the next five minutes and after freshman Ashley Marine (Peachtree City, Ga.) hit a three to tie the game at 54-54, Tusculum went on a 6-0 run to lead 60-54.  But Newberry answered with a 8-0 rally of their own to go up 62-60.

TC senior Julie Maples (Knoxville, Tenn.) knotted the score at 62-62 with 54 seconds left, but neither team could hit a shot the rest of the second half.  Newberry had four opportunities in the final 14 seconds but was unable to score.

In the extra frame, the first points of the period came on a free throw by Maples, but the Lady Indians answered on their next possession on a jumper by freshman Taquala Cooks (Lithonia, Ga.) and never relinquished the lead.

Maples led all scorers with 23 points with a team-best seven rebounds.  Martin was the only other Pioneer in double figures with 13.

Freshman Carnicha Bellinger (Greenville, S.C.) held team-high scoring honors for Newberry with 14.  In addition to Frasier's 13, Marine and sophomore Tonya Deese (Newberry, S.C.) posted 12 each.

Both teams will be on the road Wednesday for their next contest.  Newberry travels to Lenoir-Rhyne College while Tusculum plays the first of three away from home at Presbyterian College.  Both games start at 6 p.m.
