Newberry women fall at home; lose to Wingate, 75-60

NEWBERRY - Wingate forward Emily Paffrath (Bakersville, N.C.) recorded 21 points, seven rebounds, and an amazing seven blocks to power the Bulldogs over Newberry College, 75-60, in women's college basketball action Saturday afternoon at Eleazer Arena.  Wingate (9-6, 3-0) remains undefeated in South Atlantic Conference play.

Wingate accumulated a 17-point lead midway through the second half, but Newberry (10-5, 1-2) trimmed that margin to six at 66-60 with three-and-a-half minutes left in the game.  The Indians used four points each from Tonique Frasier (Walterboro, S.C.) and Carnicha Bellinger (Greenville, S.C.) during the run.  However, the Bulldogs continued to score while Newberry missed the three-pointers they were forced to attempt to close the gap further.

Wingate got out of the gates fast, securing its first double-digit lead after a little more than six minutes of play.  Paffrath had 10 of the Bulldogs' first 16 points.  The visitors grew the lead to 15 points midway through the first period before settling for a 39-27 halftime margin.

Newberry could not overcome anemic foul shooting, going 10-for-27 (37%) from the charity stripe.  The Indians were also hampered by the size differential in the frontcourt, as they were the victims of 10 Bulldog blocks.  Wingate also held a 50-43 rebounding advantage.

Junior center Veronica Taylor (Columbia, S.C.) supplied 15 points, nine of those in the second stanza, and six rebounds for Wingate.  Petra Nagy (Budapest, Hungary) scored 11 points in the winning cause.

Bellinger led all Indians with 16 points.  Frasier recorded her first double-double with 10 points and 11 boards.

Newberry looks to get back on track as they host Presbyterian College Wednesday night at 6 p.m.  Wingate will host the Bears of Lenoir-Rhyne College at the same tipoff time.
