Box Score NEWBERRY, S.C. - Newberry College allowed a nine-point Wingate run in game one of Tuesday night's conference volleyball match and never recovered, falling 30-21, 30-22, 30-28 to the Bulldogs at Eleazer Arena. Wingate (7-7) remains perfect in conference at 3-0, while Newberry (4-6) drops to 0-3 in South Atlantic Conference standings.
The visitor run was only part of the story of the Indians' demise in game one. Plagued by mistakes, Newberry finished with a .030 kill percentage, killing 10 attacks but committing nine attack errors, five of those during the 9-0 Wingate streak. Newberry had held a 20-18 lead before falling behind 27-20. Wingate allowed one more Newberry point before closing game one 30-21.
Game two saw the teams battle neck-and-neck for the first half of the game. With Newberry ahead 13-12, Wingate ran off five points (two of those being service aces by Molly Kerns) before being interrupted by a home timeout. Kerns (Bellafontaine, Ohio) did not lose focus and scored four more points, which prompted head coach Nicolee Thompson to use her second timeout. When all was said and done, the Bulldogs ran off ten consecutive points and never looked back from a 22-13 lead, winning 30-22.
"Too little, too late" would have served to frame the final set. The squads were tied eight times before Newberry rushed to a 17-14 lead, prompting a Bulldog timeout. Wingate put together an 8-3 run to force a Newberry timeout. From a 22-26 deficit, the home team sparked a rally that brought them as close as 26-27, but no closer: game three went Wingate's way, 30-28.
The Lady Indians got their best performance from freshman Adriane Miler (Summerville, S.C.), who recorded 11 kills and a .400 hitting percentage in just two games of action. Jessica Lipsi (Columbia, S.C.), Kelly Harting (Van Wert, Ohio), and Alicia Khoury (Toledo, Ohio) each got on the floor for double-digit digs (16, 11, and 10, respectively). Freshman Cara Coleman (Allentown, Pa.) filled the middle with four blocks and four kills.
Bulldog Sophomore Lauren Alley (Bristol, Tenn.) was big in the win, leading all hitters with 17 kills and a .583 attack percentage and taking part in three blocks. Danielle Thompson (Channel View, Texas) was equally potent, killing 14 balls and digging 13.
Newberry stays home for its next match, a 7 o'clock meeting with Catawba Friday night at Eleazer. This game will be audio broadcast via the Internet, and live statistics will also be available. Wingate travels to Presbyterian to play at the same time and will try to keep its perfect conference record intact.
