Box Score 2 NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Lady Indians got more for less in the second game of Friday's doubleheader with Tusculum College, using only three hits to score Newberry's only run while the Pioneers hit safely eight times with no runs to show for them. Tusculum (28-10, 7-3 SAC) broke a 1-1 tie in the opener, erupting for five runs in the eighth inning that Newberry (24-22, 4-6 SAC) could not answer.
Indian catcher Rebecca Backman (Columbia, S.C.) found the left side gap for her only hit of the day, scoring the only run Newberry would need to win game two. Christina Kirby (Delmar, Del.) doubled to start the fourth inning, moved to third on a fielding error, and scored off Backman's single.
Kirby picked up her twelfth win of the year, giving up eight hits and walking three. The 5-9 righthander was not without great defensive support, as the Lady Indians completed two double plays and limited errors to a single dropped throw in the first inning.
The game's most outstanding play strangled the Pioneers' scoring opportunity in the first inning. With one away and bases loaded, NC shortstop Courtney Linder (Irmo, S.C.) fielded Pam Jones' grounder and threw home to prevent the run on the forceout. Without hesitation, Backman fired down the first base line to retire Jones (Crawfordville, Fla.), and Betsy Shealy (Leesville, S.C.) made the catch despite not being able to see the ball during most of its approach due to the baserunner.
Game one was the Indians' second extra-inning affair in three home games. Tusculum's baserunner on second, Melissa Davis (Bullhead City, Ariz.), broke for third after a wild pitch and scored the game-winning run off a center-field single by Danielle Huskins (Erwin, Tenn.). Jessica Taylor (Greeneville, Tenn.) popped a single to right center, scoring two, then two more scored from a two-out fielding error.
Newberry took an initial 1-0 lead when Amanda Budka (Scotia, N.Y.) hammered a double that rolled to the left field wall, scoring Lucki West (College Park, Ga.) in the third. Kayce McLeod (Newberry, S.C.) saw her no-hitter snapped in the fifth with two singles that scored Tusculum's tying run. McLeod (11-11) pitched two more hitless innings, but surrendered three in the extra set.
Natasha Lindsey (Auburn, Wash.) earned the win for the Pioneers, allowing five hits but fanning eight.
Newberry resumes play Saturday afternoon against Kennesaw State University, #1 in Division II with a 50-3 record as of April 8. The Owls opened the season 38-0, and were riding a nine-game winning streak going into Friday's contests with North Greenville.
