Box Score 2 CLINTON, S.C. -- Presbyterian College Softball team split with Newberry College Thursday afternoon on senior day at the PC Softball Complex. Newberry's Kayce McLeod (Newberry, S.C.) held the Blue Hose to only one run on two hits to win game one, 3-1. In game two, PC scattered ten hits to prevail 7-1 over the visiting Indians. Presbyterian College goes to 38-11 overall and 7-5 in South Atlantic Conference play while Newberry College goes to 25-24 overall and 5-7 in SAC play.
Game 1 - Newberry 3, Presbyterian 1
The Blue Hose took the early 1-0 lead with junior Jessica Kilapatrick (Hendersonville, N.C.) scoring on a grounder by Katie Fite (Conway, S.C.).
Newberry had a chance to tie the game at 1-1 in the third but senior shortstop Jamie Vining (Fayetteville, Ga.) made an outstanding play to throw out Brantley Riley (Saluda, S.C.) at first base. PC's first baseman Lauren Hixson (Spartanburg, S.C.) also contributed on play with an outstanding stretching catch.
In the top of the fifth, Newberry went ahead 2-1 with Jessica Jackson (Batesburg, S.C.) and Jennifer Wilson (Orlando, Fla.) both driving in runs.
The Indians added another run in the seventh with Wilson dropping in a single over PC's second baseman Rachel Bailey (Howard, Ohio) to score sophomore Ashleigh Anderson (Barnwell, S.C.).
PC's sophomore pitcher Samantha Slater (Westerville, Ohio) picked up only her third loss of the season while Kayce McLeod picked up the victory for the Indians. McLeod threw seven complete innings allowing only two hits and one run.
Game 2 - Presbyterian 7, Newberry 1
In game two, the Lady Indians jumped out on top by scoring one run in the first. Christina Kirby (Delmar, Del.) hit a single to drive in Jessica Jackson for the early 1-0 lead. However, PC would score three runs on two hits and two errors in the bottom half of the inning to go ahead 3-1. Freshman Rachel Bailey scored on a grounder by Jessica Peterka (Sarasota, Fla.) and then Katie Fite smacked a double to right field to score Peterka and Lauren Hixson.
In the third, PC's Jamie Vining led off with a triple and was later driven in on a bunt single by Peterka for a 4-1 lead. Presbyterian added three more runs in the bottom of the sixth for a commanding 7-1 lead. Third baseman Amanda Carvajal (Merced, Calif.) singled in Fite for one run and Bailey singled to score senior Nickie Templeton (Clinton, S.C.) and Allison Tebbe (Alpharetta, Ga.) for insurance runs.
The Indians tried to rally in the seventh but could not overcome the 7-1 deficit as the Lady Blue Hose prevailed.
PC's senior Brooke Norris (Anderson, S.C.) picked up her 11th victory of the season while Christina Kirby picked up the loss for the Indians. Norris and freshman righthander Megan Wheelus (Florence, S.C.) combined to throw seven innings, allowing only nine hits and one run while striking out six batters.
Presbyterian returns to action this Saturday against SAC foe Tusculum College in Greeneville, Tenn., starting at 1:00 p.m. Newberry returns to action this Saturday against SAC opponent Wingate University at home with first pitch scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
