Graham wins 100th over Augusta State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

AUGUSTA, S.C. - The Lady Indians swept Augusta State in softball action today, 9-2 and 8-0, at Jaguar Field in Augusta Sunday afternoon. The second win put Newberry head coach Erica Graham at the 100-win milestone in her fifth year and elevated her team to 18-11 on the year.

Kayce McLeod (Newberry, S.C.) led Newberry to a 9-2 victory in the opener after throwing a no-hitter just six days ago against the same Lady Jaguar team. Christina Kirby (Delmar, Del.) threw five innings of shutout ball and got eight runs of offensive help to terminate the game with the eight-run mercy rule.

Lucki West went a combined 7-for-7 in the doubleheader, dropping the Lady Jaguars to 10-20.

ASU, already missing three of its players due to injury (Kelly Harbour, Erin Cown and Jessica Matta) saw Newberry run out to an early 6-0 lead, scoring two runs in each of the first three innings. The Jaguars responded with two runs in the fourth inning on a RBI by Kristi Davis and an unearned run to cut the Newberry lead to 6-2. But that was as close as the Jaguars would get as Newberry would add three runs in the top of the sixth inning to defeat ASU 9-2.

In game two, the Indians scored eight runs highlighting by a five-run fifth inning helping them defeat ASU 8-0. Pitcher Christina Kirby went 1-for-3 with two RBI and allowed no runs in five innings for her eighth win of the season.

Newberry plays on the road Monday and Tuesday, facing USC Aiken and North Greenville College, respectively. Conference play opens this Saturday, as Newberry hosts Carson-Newman.
