Box Score NEWBERRY, S.C. – Junior Kayce McLeod (Newberry, S.C.) threw her first career no-hitter to lift Newberry College over visiting Augusta State, 1-0, Monday afternoon in softball action. Threatening weather that sprinkled on game one of the doubleheader let loose in the final inning, prompting officials to cancel the scheduled second game.
McLeod struck out five in the complete game shutout. Two Newberry errors, a hit batter and a walk were all that separated the 5’7” pitcher from a perfect game, although five of seven innings were perfect. The shutout promoted Newberry College to 14-9, while Augusta State falls to 10-12.
While the Lady Indians recorded seven hits (three for extra bases), they managed only one run. In the second inning with two outs, Courtney Lindler (Irmo, S.C.) tripled to left field. The next batter, Amanda Budka (Scotia, N.Y.) put a double to nearly the same spot to plate Lindler. Newberry had another chance in the fourth with runners on the corners and no outs, but the Lady Jags clamped down and prevented any scoring.
Newberry next faces Lander on Thursday afternoon on the road. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
