Newberry Softball rebounds to take second at Bearcat Classic

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

GREENWOOD, S.C. - After being shut out twice on Saturday, Newberry returned the favor by blanking Wheeling Jesuit and Lander, 1-0 and 2-0, in softball action played on the rarest day on the calendar.  The Lady Indians claimed runner-up status in the three-team field and improved to 5-5 on the year.

Senior Amy Burnsworth won 1-0 in her first appearance on the mound, getting all the offensive help she would need in the first inning.  Courtney Lindler singled, then scored on a Wheeling Jesuit (1-3) mishandle of Christina Kirby's batted ball. Burnsworth spread four hits over seven innings, and escaped the greatest WJC threat in the sixth by assisting the third putout with a runner on third.

The nightcap against Lander (9-4) started similar to Newberry's earlier game, with NC getting its initial run in the first inning due in part to an opponent error.  Jessica Jackson, reaching base on balls, was plated by Brantley Riley's two-out RBI single.  The Lady Indians struck again in the fifth, scoring pinch runner Heather Arnold off singles by Lindler (RBI), Julie Wideman, and Jen Wilson.

Lander, like Wheeling Jesuit, made its comeback effort in the sixth.  With bases loaded and two outs, Kirby fielded the third out and preserved the win for herself, allowing five hits on the day to improve her record to 3-2.

Thursday has Newberry playing host to the Lady Pacers from Aiken at 2:30.
