Box Score 2 GREENWOOD, S.C. – Hits and runs were scarce for the Lady Indian softball team on the opening day of Lander University's tournament as Newberry (3-5) was blanked by the host team and Wheeling Jesuit College.
Wheeling (1-0) escaped with a 2-0 win by scoring all its runs and recording half of its hits in a two-error third inning. Newberry could put together no more than two hits in a single inning, advancing a runner as far as third in the fourth inning. Jen Wilson was thrown out at the plate after trying to score off a Brantley Riley single to left field. NC's other three hits were spread over three innings.
In the second game, Lander's Sarah Permenter dominated the Newberry offense with four perfect innings as the Lady Bearcats won, 4-0. Permenter allowed one Newberry hit and walked three, while the host team exploded in the sixth inning for three runs on three hits and an Indian miscue.
The Bearcat Classic Softball Tournament was originally scheduled for six games between four teams. With the North Greenville cancellation, the remaining teams decided to play a double round-robin format; thus Newberry will face the same squads on Sunday.
