Newberry women drop 62-61 decision at Erskine

DUE WEST - Erskine College overcame a 13-point halftime deficit and waited until 56 seconds were left in the game to grab their first lead, but it was enough to knock off Newberry College 62-61 in Belk Arena Friday night.

Erskine (3-3) trailed the entire game until Kristy Vaughn (Yadkinville, N.C.) converted a short jumper with under a minute left.  The Indians tied the score again off a pair of Carnicha Bellinger (Greenville, S.C.) free throws at 60-60.  Newberry (6-3) had a chance to tie the game with a pair of free throws with a second on the clock, but was only able to convert one.

The contest truly was a tale of two halves, as the Indians converted 48% of their shots in the first period, but made only five field goals in the second.  Newberry found the range on six three-pointers out of 15 attempted before halftime, but missed all seven attempts following the break.

Erskine's Chris Pack (Fountain Inn, S.C.) scored a career-high and game-high 24 points to lead the Flying Fleet.  Anita Owens (Walhalla, S.C.) and Vaughn posted 17 and 11 points, respectively.

Bellinger led all Indians with 12 points, followed by Laura Banda (Holcomb, Kan.) with 11.  Banda scored Newberry's first eight points with her first three shots.

Newberry's next action is at Limestone College in Gaffney next Saturday, December 18, in a doubleheader with the men.  The Lady Indians handled Limestone easily in their first matchup this season, 86-69.  The action begins at 5:30 p.m.
