NEWBERRY - Newberry College's women's basketball team jumped ahead of Limestone College 30-9 in the first eleven minutes of action and never trailed, defeating the Saints 86-69 Saturday afternoon at Eleazer Arena. The Lady Indians led by 32 with 9:25 left in the contest before Limestone (0-2) chipped away at the lead.
Newberry (2-0) solved the foul shooting problems it had in the season opener, finishing today's outing connecting on 26-for-37 (70.3%), 15 of those in the second half.
Freshman Carnicha Bellinger (Greenville, S.C.) missed only two shots all day, going 6-7 from the floor, including 2-for-2 from beyond the arc, to score 17 points in 16 minutes. Senior Laura Banda (Holcomb, Kan.) scored 16 points and shot 9-for-10 from the charity stripe. Tonique Frasier (Walterboro, S.C.) notched 13 for the Lady Indian cause.
Two Saints scored in double digits, those being Tiffany Jones (Greer, S.C.) with 23 and Danielle Vieira (Coatesville, Ind.) with 11.
Newberry outrebounded Limestone 51 to 31, including an advantage of 12 on the offensive boards.
61 fouls were called in the game, with five players (three Indians and two Saints) disqualified due to fouling out. Six technicals were also handed out on the day, three for each squad.
Newberry plays its third consecutive home game Tuesday the 23rd, hosting Coker College at 6 p.m. in the first game of a doubleheader. The men play Erskine in the nightcap. Limestone will play Monday night at Converse College.
