Box Score NEWBERRY, S.C. - Sophomore middle blocker Kathryn Phillips (Lexington, S.C.) recorded double-digit kills and blocks to lead visiting Lenoir-Rhyne College to a 3-0 victory (30-25, 30-24, 30-23) over Newberry College Friday night at Eleazer Arena. Lenoir-Rhyne (17-4, 7-0 SAC) remains undefeated in the South Atlantic Conference with the win, while Newberry (6-10) drops to 1-6 in conference play.
L-R dominated the middle, totaling 14 team blocks to Newberry's 5. Four Bears killed ten or more balls, while only Jessica Lopez (Madison, Wisc.) had ten kills for the Indians.
All three games were close, with neither team gaining a lead of more than six points in any game. Game one saw the ladies play even to 13-all until L-R gradually moved ahead to 21-28. Newberry fought back to 25-29 until the Bears claimed game point.
The Indians appeared to have the second set under control, going ahead 14-11 to prompt a Lenoir-Rhyne timeout. Newberry opened up another four-point margin to force Dave Markland's second timeout. Newberry saw its last lead at 24-23 before slipping into neutral, allowing the final seven points to go to the Bears.
Newberry stayed within three points of the visitors most of the match, until L-R doubled its 21-18 margin to six at 28-22. The Lady Indians could not rally, and L-R closed the match out at 30-23.
For the visitors, Leslie Hinkle (High Point, N.C.), Angela Danley (Loganville, Ga.), and Rebekah Steinlin (Columbia, S.C.) joined Phillips in the double-digit kills category with 11, 11, and 13 kills, respectively. Setter Lauren McLelland (Statesville, N.C.) assisted 43 kills for the Bears. Defensively, L-R had five players with more than 10 kills.
For Newberry libero Kelly Harting (Ohio City, Ohio) had a game-high 21 digs, and Alicia Khoury (Toledo, Ohio) led all Indians with 30 assists.
Lenoir-Rhyne's hitting percentage was .226 for the match, compared to Newberry's .061. L-R out-killed Newberry 53 to 38.
Newberry takes the court tomorrow morning against Mars Hill, while Lenoir-Rhyne plays Presbyterian on Saturday.
