Justin Bass enters his second season as the assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for the Newberry volleyball team.

At Newberry, Bass has led a defense that saw two South Atlantic Conference Defensive Players of the Week as well as several individual defensive school records broken, including career block assists (322), career total blocks (416), digs per set in a season (5.3), solo blocks in a match (6), and digs in a three-set match (32). Bass also oversaw the signing of several players to an impressive 2022 recruiting class.

Bass comes to Newberry from North Greenville University, where he had been an assistant for the Crusaders since 2018, primarily coaching defense. While at North Greenville, the Crusaders won 18 matches in each of his first two years. In the spring of 2021, the team finished the regular season 12-0 and won the Conference Carolinas regular-season championship. His spring 2021 defense proved to be one of the best in the country, holding opponents to a hitting percentage of 0.108 (8th in Division II), as well as having players in the top-ten nationally in both total blocks and total digs. While at North Greenville, the Crusaders won 18 matches in each of his first two years. North Greenville volleyball also earned the AVCA Team Academic Award each year that he was there.

Before North Greenville, Justin was an assistant coach at Dorman High School for the 2017-18 school year where he helped lead the team to their thirteenth state title, contributing to the legacy of a historic program.

Prior to that, he served as an assistant coach at the University of South Carolina Upstate from 2016-2017 where he assisted with a defense that finished sixth in Division I in team digs while also having a player lead the Atlantic Sun Conference in total digs en route to the program’s first appearance in the ASUN Volleyball Tournament in which they advanced to the semifinals.

He also coached club volleyball with Upward for five years and one year with Upstate Volleyball Club.

Bass graduated from the University of South Carolina Upstate with degrees in Psychology and Communications.
