Head men's and women's tennis coach Mark Gardiner announced the hiring of former Wolves player Ross Sons as an assistant coach with both programs in July 2019.
"I am excited to come back and coach at my alma mater, to help build the program up even more and try to bring a SAC championship to the school," Sons said. "I want to thank Mark for bringing me on as assistant coach and thank Ralph Patterson for the opportunity. I can't wait to get started."
"We are excited to have Ross back to Newberry," Gardiner added. "Ross loves the game of tennis and has a true passion to coach at the collegiate level."
Sons, a 2014 Newberry graduate, has spent the last two seasons assisting the Limestone men's and women's tennis programs. He has helped the Saints' programs combine for three regular season Conference Carolinas championships, a conference tournament title, one NCAA Championship bid, and a No. 27 final national ranking for the Limestone men's program in 2018. Eleven Limestone players attained all-conference honors during his time on staff.
Sons also has experience as an assistant coach at River Bluff High School in Lexington and has instructed at three private clubs in the greater Columbia area, including serving two years as the head tennis professional at Rockbridge Club.
As a player, Sons racked up 29 singles wins and 37 doubles victories during his four seasons on the team. He played most frequently at No. 5 singles and No. 3 doubles, although he competed in every position except the top singles flight during his career. He amassed 33 wins in South Atlantic Conference play between singles and doubles action.
