Scott Hutchinson was promoted to men's and women's Head Cross Country and Track and Field Coach in the summer of 2024 after serving as head men's and women's cross country and assistant track coach the last previous two seasons.
In his first season as head coach the women finished seventh at both the SAC Indoor and Outdoor championships while the men 11th at the indoor meet but improved to finish eighth at the outdoor championships.
Individual championships included Irma Watson-Perez winning the women's weight throw at the 2025 SAC Indoor Track and Field Championships, Sean Price winning the men's javelin and Andrea Pascual Rivera taking home the title in the women's hammer.
He began his coaching career at his alma mater immediately after graduation from the University of Maine at Presque Isle in 1986.
Hutchinson is a 14-time Conference Coach of the Year, and a 5-time finalist for NCAA New England Region Coach of the Year.
He has coached 8 All-American's, 62 individual conference champions, over 630 (79 cross country, 284 indoor, 268 outdoor) all-conference performers, and 212 NCAA All-Region performers. 114 All-ECAC winners (seven cross country, 117 track & field), with his student-athletes being recognized as NCAA Academic All-America 24 times.
Hutchinson has also led his teams to a total of 13 NCAA Academic All-America honors.
He has previously served as head coach at Thomas University (Ga.), St. Joseph College (Maine), University of Maine at Farmington, Marywood University (Pa.), University of Southern Maine, Salve Regina (R.I.), and Babson College (Mass.).
He started the track and cross-country programs from scratch at Thomas.
As a student-athlete, Hutchinson was a four-year member of the cross-country team and a two-year member of the outdoor track club team. Hutchinson was a three-time MVP for the Owls, as well as a two-time all-conference performer, an NAIA All-Region performer, and represented UMPI at the NAIA National Cross-Country Championships.
He earned NAIA All-New England honors after finishing eighth with a 24:40 effort at the 8K New England Regional Championship meet. As a standout track & field athlete, Hutchinson recorded a 2:00 performance in the 800-Meter and ran the mile in 4:26. He also threw the javelin 178 feet (54.25m). He was a two-time All-Conference honoree and was chosen three times as the team's MVP and Captain. Hutchinson was elected to the UMPI Hall of Fame in 2002.
Hutchinson, who holds a USA Track/Field Level 1 certification and is a member of the U.S. Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association.
A Carthage, Maine native, Hutchinson received his Bachelor of Science degree in Recreation Management from the University of Maine-Presque Isle in 1986.
He and his wife Stacie have two children, Scott and Samantha.
