Pierce Spangler will enter his fifth season with the Newberry College Football Coaching staff. Spangler will be coaching the running backs along with the punt return team and assisting with the punt team. His other non-coaching duties include keeping track of the Countable Athletically Related Activites Logo (CARA Log) and managing team fundraising events.
In 2024, Spangler led the Newberry College Running Backs to 1,467 rush yards and 13 touchdowns. He also assisted the Newberry Punt Team to #1 nationally ranked in punt return defense (-3 opponent punt return yards).
In 2023, Spangler led the Newberry College Running Backs to 1,524 rush yards and 13 touchdowns. He guided Dwayne Wright, who would go on to receive 2023 Newberry College Football Player of the Year.
In 2022 Spangler led a running back room that included first team All-American and Harlon Hill finalist Mario Anderson. Anderson rushed for 1,585 yards on the season and finished his Newberry tenure third all-time in career rushing yards with 3,301. The Wolves were 26th in the nation averaging 201.5 yards on the ground per game.Â
In 2021, Spangler led a running back room that was a part of the 23rd best rushing offense in the nation averaging 203.9 yards per game. He guided Mario Anderson to 233 rushes, 1,273 total yards, and 12 touchdowns.
Before Newberry, Spangler served at Presbyterian College as an assistant coach for linebackers with his father Tommy Spangler from 2016-20. From 2016-17 Spangler worked with the linebackers. In 2018-19 Spangler worked with the defensive ends for the Blue Hose before going back to the linebackers coach in the spring 2021 season. He also assisted with special teams during his entire tenure at Presbyterian.
As a member of the Blue Hose coaching staff, Spangler guided three-time All-Big South and All-American Linebacker (Spring, 2021) Colby Campbell. Campbell holds the Presbyterian D1 and Big South's single season record in tackles at 150.Â
In 2019,  he helped lead Tanner Wilhelm to 53 tackles and 6.0 tackles for loss on the year with 4.0 sacks. In 2018 he helped lead Gyasi Yeldell to a Second Team All-Conference selection that saw him have a solid year with 51 tackles, 9.5 tfl, 5.5 sacks and a pair of forced fumbles.Â
In 2017, during his first year as a full-time staff member at PC, Spangler assisted with the linebackers. Spangler volunteered at PC in 2015 and 2016, working with the linebackers and special teams.
The Ruston, La. native earned his bachelor's degree from Louisiana Tech University in Interdiisciplinary Studies in 2017. At Louisiana Tech, Spangler spent three years on the Bulldogs baseball team. Spangler was named to the Conference USA Commissioners' Honor Roll in the 2013-14 Academic year.Â
A two-sport athlete in Ruston High School, Spangler was a three-year letter-winner in baseball and a two-year letter-winning in football before graduating in 2012.
