THE NEWBERRY COLLEGE ALMA MATER

Gilbert Voigt, Class of 1903 and Professor of Modern Languages and Literatur, wrote the words for the Alma Mater in 1923 while he was an accompanist for the Newberry Glee Club.

The tune is taken from Gustave Luders' "Heidelberg Student Chorus" in The Prince of Pilsen. Voigt studied at Germany's University of Leipzig after his graduation from Newberry. He was a faculty member three different times: 1907-19, 1921-23 and 1948-54.

The College awarded him the Honorary Doctor of Literature degree during the College's 100th Anniversary Celebration in 1956. 

In addition to teaching English in his first faculty appointment, he was the College's first men's basketball coach for two seasons from 1911-13. His first basketball team won the South Carolina state championship in 1912.
