SALISBURY, N.C. — The Newberry women's lacrosse team turned in a complete performance on Wednesday afternoon, defeating Catawba 15-6 at Shuford Stadium. With the win, the Wolves move to 8-8 overall and 5-4 in South Atlantic Conference play.
Catawba struck first with two early goals in the opening quarter, but Newberry quickly settled in and controlled the remainder of the game, outscoring Catawba 15-4 over the final three quarters. The Wolves broke through in the second quarter with a six-goal surge to take a 6-4 halftime lead, then extended their advantage with a strong second-half effort on both ends of the field.
Ella Todd led the Newberry offense with a standout performance, finishing with four goals and two assists for six points. Nicole DiNapoli added a hat trick, while Tomi Newkirk contributed two goals and two assists. Tunie Mullen also scored twice, and Shannon Creagh posted a goal and two assists. Newberry's balanced attack saw 10 different players record at least one point, with additional goals coming from Lana Howell, Scythe Shephard, Jadie Burns, and Keile Saylors.
In goal, Presley Green anchored the Wolves defensively, playing 57:51 and recording six saves while earning the win. Catherine Downes also saw time in relief, helping Newberry close out the final minutes.As a team, Newberry outshot Catawba 40-15 and held a 31-12 advantage in shots on goal. The Wolves went a perfect 21-for-21 on clears, showing strong possession control throughout the contest.
Newberry also led in ground balls (19-10) and draw controls (16-7), while forcing 18 Catawba turnovers. The Wolves capitalized late, scoring five goals in the fourth quarter and shutting out Catawba in the final period to seal the victory.
The Wolves will return to Setzler Field on Saturday, April 18, to host Tusculum University in South Atlantic Conference play. Opening draw is scheduled for 4 p.m. for Senior Day.
