Box Score JEFFERSON CITY, TN - The No. 23 Newberry Wolves secured a pivotal 4-2 victory over the Carson-Newman Eagles on Saturday afternoon at the Buddy Catlett Tennis Complex, clinching the No. 4 seed in the South Atlantic Conference Tournament.
Newberry set the tone early in doubles play, capturing the doubles point with wins on courts No. 1 and No. 2. The duo of Lina Sarhan and Hazel Vernon battled to a 7-5 victory at No. 1, while Yui Suzuki and Renee Dorval added a 6-4 win at No. 2 to give the Wolves a 1-0 lead. Carson-Newman claimed the No. 3 doubles match, but Newberry had already done enough to take the early advantage.
The Wolves carried that momentum into singles action, winning three of the first four completed matches to secure the team victory. Suzuki delivered a hard-fought straight-set win at No. 2 singles, outlasting her opponent in a tight first set before closing it out in a tiebreak, 7-5, 7-6 (8-6). Sarhan followed with a dominant 6-1, 6-3 victory at No. 3, and Aina Miralles was equally impressive at No. 4, cruising to a 6-0, 6-2 win.
Carson-Newman picked up points at No. 1 and No. 5 singles, but it wasn't enough to overcome Newberry's strong showing. The match at No. 6 singles featuring Vernon went unfinished after the Wolves clinched the team result.
With the win, Newberry not only improves its postseason positioning but also builds momentum heading into the SAC Tournament, where the Wolves will enter as the No. 4 seed looking to make a deep run. The Wolves will return to the courts on April 16th to take part in the South Atlantic Conerence Tournament.Â
