Wolves Fall in Top-10 Conference Matchup at Anderson

ANDERSON, S.C. — The No. 6 Newberry College men's lacrosse team battled in a high-scoring South Atlantic Conference matchup but fell 17-13 to No. 10 Anderson University on Wednesday night. The Wolves move to 9-4 overall and 5-2 in SAC play.

Newberry came out strong after an early 3-0 deficit, responding with three unanswered goals late in the first quarter. Liam Vollans sparked the run with an unassisted goal, followed by scores from Scott Williams and Bradley David to tie the game at 3-3 after one quarter. The Wolves carried that momentum into the second quarter, opening with a 4-0 run to build a 7-3 advantage. Vollans added his second of the night, while Williams, Mason Carfello, and Gage Vigar all found the back of the net. Newberry controlled play for much of the first half before Anderson trimmed the deficit late to make it 7-6 at the break.

Statistically, the Wolves finished with 40 shots, 27 shots on goal, 28 ground balls, and went 23-of-27 on clears. Newberry also converted both of its extra-man opportunities, going 2-for-2 in the fourth quarter. The Wolves matched Anderson with 18 turnovers and won 13 of 33 faceoffs. Individually, Vollans led Newberry with a hat trick on eight shots, while Williams also recorded three goals on four shots on goal. David added two goals, and Vigar contributed two goals and an assist on five shots. Carfello, White, and Burt each added a goal, while Max Taylor recorded an assist.

In goal, Ben McMullen played the full 60 minutes for the Wolves, recording 14 saves while allowing 17 goals. The third quarter shifted momentum in favor of the Trojans, as Anderson used a 7-2 run to take control of the game. Newberry goals from Williams and David helped keep the Wolves within reach, but Anderson's offensive surge pushed them ahead 13-9 entering the final frame. Newberry continued to fight in the fourth quarter, with Andrew White opening the scoring in the period. Vollans and Vigar each added goals, including a man-up tally from Vigar that cut the deficit to four with just over five minutes remaining. However, Anderson answered with three straight goals to extend its lead before Matthew Burt added a late man-up goal for Newberry.

Newberry will return home to Setzler Field for its next South Atlantic Conference matchup against No. 4 Wingate University on Saturday, April 4, with opening faceoff scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
