HILTON HEAD, SC - The No. 19 Newberry Wolves women's tennis team continued its strong season Monday afternoon with a dominant 7-0 victory over West Virginia State at Hilton Head Island.
Newberry secured the doubles point by winning two of the three matches. The pair of Hazel Vernon and Lina Sarhan controlled their match at No. 2 doubles with a 6-3 win, while Margarita Roshka and Aina Miralles cruised to a 6-0 victory at the No. 3 position to give the Wolves the early advantage.
The Wolves carried that momentum into singles play, sweeping all six matches to complete the shutout. Margarita Roshka led the lineup at No. 1 singles with a strong straight-set victory, defeating Maria Mercedes Kaltakian 7-5, 6-2. Yui Suzuki followed with a convincing performance at No. 2 singles, winning 6-0, 6-2 against Daniela Cruzado Fretel.
Lina Sarhan continued the momentum at No. 3 singles with a commanding 6-2, 6-1 victory, while Aina Miralles added another point for the Wolves at No. 4 singles with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Talia Nichols.
Renee Dorval delivered another dominant showing at No. 5 singles, earning a 6-0, 6-2 victory against Carlota Pamies Petit. Hazel Vernon rounded out the lineup at No. 6 singles, facing off and defeating Christina Karagrigoriou 8-1 and secure the final point of the day.
With the sweep, Newberry improved to 8-1 on the season as the Wolves showcased their depth across the lineup in both doubles and singles play. The Wolves will return to the courts on March 18th against Wingate University.Â
