The Newberry College Wolves baseball team battled from behind twice to earn a split Saturday at Coker and earned a 2-1 series victory to improve to 13-8 overall and 9-3 in the South Atlantic Conference.
The Wolves fell behind in both games including 13-8 in game one before losing 14-13 in 12 innings and 2-0 after four innings in games two before scoring six runs over the final three innings to earn a 6-2 victory.
Will Rissmiller improved to 2-0 by pitching 5.1 innings of three-hit, one run relief while striking out four and walking just one.
Luke Compton cut the Cobra lead to 2-1 with a run scoring single in the fifth.
The Wolves grabbed the lead in the sixth as
Logan Busenlehner doubled in
Cody Bradt to tie the game,
Parker Mergo drove in Busenlehner to give the Wolves the lead, and
Chandler Mims doubled in Mergo to increase the lead to 4-2.
Brandt and Mergo added insurance runs in the seventh with a pair of run scoring singles.
The Wolves trailed the Cobras 13-8 after seven innings in the opener, but Bryson Nucklos drove in two runs with a single in the eight to cut the lead to 13-10 and Mims drove in one run and Compton two more in the ninth to tie the game at 13-13.
Anthony Plotkin and
Cayden Hansen combined to allow just one run on one hit over 4.2 innings to keep the Wolves in the game before giving up a run without a hit in the bottom of the 12
th.
Cooper Raines drove in four runs in the first game,
Keillor Osbon added three RBI in game one, Compton drove in three runs in the doubleheader to improve his team lead to 23, Mims scored four runs, had three hits, drove in two and Nuckols had four hits and four runs batted in over the two games.
The Wolves return home Tuesday when they host Southern Wesleyan at 6:00 p.m. at Smith Road Complex.Â
